The Problem of Packaging Waste in Vietnam & Role of PRO Vietnam

Rapid urbanization and consumerization combined with lack of anti litter culture and absence of recycling mindset among the population is building up to a large-scale litter and ecological problem in Vietnam.

Most of Vietnam’s mismanaged packaging waste is ending up in landfills and/or fouling country’s long coastline.

Vietnam discards 1.8 million tonnes of plastics a year.

There have been enough conversations about this problem.

Vietnam ranks among Global Top 4 Countries with largest volume of mismanaged plastic waste.

A huge portion of inorganic waste in Vietnam is packaging which does not get treated properly.

In Ho Chi Minh City, approximately only 11% of plastic waste are collected for recycling.

The Packaging Recycling Organisation (PRO) Vietnam will support the Government in the “Recycle” Aspect of 3R. The focus of the PRO Vietnam will be to build and grow collection of packaging in partnership with local goverment and stakeholders in the value chain of packaging in order to increase recycling.

PRO Vietnam Roadmap 2020 - 2030

Circular Economy of Packaging

PRO Vietnam will be focused on incentivizing recycling industry to increase collection via the informal and formal sectors, in addition to education and awareness to drive behavior change by promoting the circular economy for packaging.

PRO Vietnam aims to collaborate with the recycling business, driving a circular economy of packaging in Vietnam by 2030. This model will recreate an entire ecosystem of consumer-good packages, from design, manufacture, to collecting after usage, recycling and reuse, giving a second life to packaging waste.
